I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."  On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:  Focusing on Christ's Atonement, Crucifixion and Resurrection and how it applies to me. Easter in next Sunday, and I really wanted for my family to be able to focus on the Savior this whole week leading up to Easter, Sunday.

Preparation: The plan for this Family Home Evening is to kick off a week long focus on the Savior, his life, atoning sacrifice, Crucifixion and resurrection.  Preparation will include, downloading or having the videos available for viewing each day.  Also, prepare to have the following pictures ready to view: Picture of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, Picture of The Last Supper, Picture of the Crucifixion and picture of the Resurrection.  Gather the following Items: Nail, White linen, sacrament cup or picture sacrament trays. Have a Family Home Evening Journal for each family member. See printable below.

Introduce this weeks Topic:  Focusing on Christ's Atonement, Crucifixion and Resurrection and how it applies to me.

Scripture: Read and Mark: D & C 19:23-24

Article of Faith: # 4- "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin the Family Home Evening by showing the following items: A nail, A sacrament cup, and White linen cloth.  Ask your family if they know what those three items have in common.  Allow members of family to answer, thank them for their answers. Explain that these items all help us remember something very special about Easter. Show them the following pictures: Picture of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, Picture of The Last Supper, Picture of the Crucifixion and picture of the Resurrection.

Explain that Heavenly Father has so much love for us, we are his spirit children, that he wants us to return and live with him someday. He knew that this would not be possible for us to do alone. So, he sent our eldest brother, his only begotten son to come to earth, to atone for our pains and sins, making it possible for us to repent and be forgiven. He then would suffer physical pain on the cross and experience physical death.  But that was not the end! After three days of laying in a tomb, Jesus was resurrected, meaning he overcame physical death. His body and spirit was reunited never to be separated ever again.  This makes it possible for each of us to be resurrected also someday.

Ask each family member to close their eyes, to listen to the words of the song and to think about the amazing love our Savior has for them personally, as you play "I Stand All Amazed" Hymnal pg 193.  Have them imagine the immense pain Jesus must have been in as he suffered for all of the pains, sorrows and sins of the world. Have them think about how comforting it feels to know that what ever we will experience in this life, he has gone through, he knows, sympathizes and helps us carry our burdens. Show them the nail and have them think about the physical pain he must have been in as they nailed him to the cross. Then have them think about how wonderful it is that he overcame death, was resurrected and lives! After the Song Help them write their feelings in their Family Home Evening Journal.

Explain that each day until Easter, as a family we will be watching a movie about the Savior. Here are the links to the videos with what day to play them:

Monday: "For God So Loved The World"

Tuesday: "The Savior Suffers in Gethsemane"

Wednesday: "Jesus is Scourged and Crucified"

Thursday: "Jesus Laid in a Tomb"

Friday: "Jesus is Resurrected"

Saturday: "He is Risen"

Sunday: "He Lives: Testimonies of Jesus"
After each time you play the movie allow each family member to record their feelings in their Family Home Evening Journal.

Bear testimonies on Christ's Atonement, Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Close with a Family Prayer.

Free Printables: Best way to print printables is to click on the image and save it to your computer. You will then be able to print the image from your computer.

I usually use Composition Books for my Journals. These could be cut out and pasted onto the front. You could also make your own journal out of a cereal box, string and white paper. Here is a link to a notebook tutorial.
