Family Home Evening on Participating in Wholesome Activities Will Strengthen My Family (LDS Primary Theme for August 2014)

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is: Participating in Wholesome Activities Will Strengthen My Family (LDS Primary Theme for August 2014).   I love the article about the topic in August 2014 Friend Magazine here's the link

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."  On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "Fun To Do"  Children's Song Book Pg 253  (as you sing this song have each family choose something that is fun to do, to sing in the song)

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Introduce this weeks Topic:

Scripture: Read: “Successful . . . families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World”).

Article of Faith: #8"We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God."(Pearl of Great Price)

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin, Family Home Evening by giving each family five small strips of paper. Have them list a different thing they like to do together as a family on each piece of the paper. Have the family members hand all of the pieces of paper in.

Read this story, which can be found in the August 2014 issue of the Friend Magazine, titled Participating in Wholesome Activities Will Strengthen My Family

"Lucas was bored. He wandered around the house to find someone to play with him. His brother, Ben, was playing on the computer. His sister, Sophie, was texting her friend. Mom was looking through the mail, and Dad was reading.
“It’s boring around here,” Lucas said.
Dad looked up from his book. “What do you mean?”
“We don’t do anything together,” Lucas said. “We’re all doing our own thing.”
Dad closed his book. “You’re right,” he said. “I’ll gather the family together, and we’ll do something fun.”
Lucas grinned. “Great!”
A few minutes later Lucas’s family sat together, wondering what to do. Sophie wanted to text her friend. Ben wanted to keep playing his computer game.
“My friend Paul likes to go on walks with his family,” Lucas said. “And Alexander’s family likes to play sports.”
But Sophie didn’t want to go outside in the hot weather, and Ben couldn’t play sports because he had hurt his ankle.
“Those are fun things for your friends to do, Lucas,” Mom said, “but what does our family like to do?”
Ben said he liked to play board games. Sophie said she liked to read. Lucas said he liked racing cars.
“Let’s pick one of those things to do right now,” Dad said. “Why don’t we play a board game first?”
Soon they had all gathered around a game and started to play. After a while Sophie put away her phone. Ben stopped looking toward the computer. By the end of the game, everyone was smiling, but Lucas’s smile was the biggest."
Go around and have each family member read one of the pieces of paper (that state something fun to do as a family).  Continue until all of the pieces of paper have been read. Decide if there is any other activities that the family would like to do together.  Maybe someone in the family has a hobby or talent that they would like to teach or share with the rest of the family. Then place all of the pieces of paper into a container.  Decide as a family how often you will pick one of the activities to do together as a family.

Invite family members to bear their testimonies about the importance of participating in wholesome activities together as a family is, and how it can help strengthen the family.

Close with a Family Prayer.
