Family Home Evening on Standing for the Right

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is: Standing for the Right (this FHE is based on the April 2014 General Conference talk by Neil L. Anderson, "Spiritual Whirlwinds". )

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."  On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Read the article, "Spiritual Whirlwinds". Prepare to show the video, "Dare to Stand Alone"

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "Stand for the Right", Children's Song Book Pg 159

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Introduce this weeks Topic:

Scripture: Read: Deuteronomy 6:17-18

Article of Faith: #8"We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God."(Pearl of Great Price)

Family Home Evening Instruction:
Begin family home evening by showing the video, "Dare to Stand Alone".  After the movie, ask family members what some of the circumstances were where someone stood up for what they believed in. Discuss those circumstaces as a family.

Read this quote:
"President Thomas S. Monson has said, “Where once the standards of the Church and the standards of society were mostly compatible, now there is a wide chasm between us, and it’s growing ever wider.”6"

Discuss as a family what some ways the standards of the church and the standards of the world differ.

Read this quote:
"President Harold B. Lee said: “The only safety we have as members of this church is to … learn to give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through His prophet. … There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes. … It may contradict your political views … your social views … interfere with … your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord Himself, … ‘the gates of hell shall not prevail against you … and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you …’ (D&C 21:6).”16"

Discuss as a family why it is important to follow God's law, even if society says other wise.

Invite family members to share examples of how they can stand up for what they believe. Remind family

member to not be "self-righteous", but treat other with love and respect, when we stand for our beliefs.

Read this quote from Neil L. Anderson's conference address:

"My young brothers and sisters, how we love you, admire you, and pray for you. Don’t let the whirlwinds drag you down. These are your days—to stand strong as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.24
Build more firmly your foundation upon the rock of your Redeemer.
Treasure more completely His incomparable life and teachings.
Follow more diligently His example and His commandments.
Embrace more deeply His love, His mercy and grace, and the powerful gifts of His Atonement.
As you do, I promise you that you will see the whirlwinds for what they are—tests, temptations, distractions, or challenges to help you grow. And as you live righteously year after year, I assure you that your experiences will confirm to you again and again that Jesus is the Christ. The spiritual rock under your feet will be solid and secure. You will rejoice that God has placed you here to be a part of the final preparations for Christ’s glorious return.
The Savior said, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”25This is His promise to you. I know this promise is real. I know that He lives, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
(We also asked our children each individually how school was going. How they were liking their classes, who their friends are this year, etc.)
Invite family members to bear their testimonies about Standing for the right.
Close with a Family Prayer.
