Family Home Evening Instruction:
Begin Family Home Evening by reading the following quote from, Elder Ballard's Talk:
Elder Ballards states,
"Recently, a friend of mine took his son on a trip down the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon, located in southeastern Utah. The canyon is famous for its 14 miles (23 km) of white-water rapids that can be particularly hazardous.

In preparation for their adventure, they had carefully reviewed the National Park Service website, which contains important information about personal preparedness and common, hidden hazards.

At the beginning of the trip, one of the experienced river guides reviewed important safety instructions, emphasizing three rules that would ensure the group’s safe travel through the rapids. “Rule number one: stay in the boat! Rule number two: always wear a life jacket! Rule number three: always hold on with both hands!” He then said again, with even more emphasis, “Above all, remember rule number one: stay in the boat!”

Give each family member a copy of the free printable above.  Invite a family member to read the quote found on the top of the pages,

"The Lord in His goodness has provided help, including a boat, essential supplies such as life jackets, and experienced river guides who give guidance and safety instructions to help us make our way down the river of life to our final destination.

Discuss with your family member what the BOAT symbolizes?  (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Discuss with your family how each family member can STAY IN THE BOAT? What are some things that can be done each day?  Invite family members to write on the boat,  "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as examples of things they can do each day to help them stay in the boat.

Discuss with your family member what the LIFE JACKET symbolizes? (The Scriptures/Word of God) Discuss with your family how daily scripture study can be like a Life Jacket and help us to hold on tight. Invite family members to write "the scriptures" next to the life jacket.

Discuss with your family members what the RIVER GUIDES symbolize? (The Apostles, Prophets, and Local Church Leaders)  Discuss how the Prophets, Apostles and local church leaders can direct us and guides us through our journey. Invite family members to write next to the river guide, "Church Leaders".

If you would like you could have family members color their pictures.

Invite family members to bear their testimonies about how staying in the boat of the gospel and holding on with both hands can keep them safe from the dangerous waters of the word.

Close with a Family Prayer.
